Father's Day

The story of Icarus always bothered me. The short version is that Icarus always dreamed of flight so his father made the wings for the two of them and they were able to achieve flight. Icarus’ downfall was that the wings were made of wax and he was warned about flying too close to the sun for the wings would melt. Icarus flew too high, his wings melted and he fell to his death. The message is probably something along the lines of “Obey your father” or “Don’t fly to high or risk falling hard”. The first one I agree with and while flying high has risks of falling, personally, to not try at all is the only true failure.

I have flown too high, I have taken more than one pair of wings from my father, I have fallen and sometimes it seemed I would die. Unlike Icarus’ father, mine has been able to catch me. I have scars, bruises and bad memories from the various falls I have had through my life, but I have been saved before my life was ruined completely. I feel grateful because many people do not have this kind of support. There are many who are better off than I am, but there are many who are worse off as well, so I am grateful for everything I have.

So this week I celebrate my Father, who doesn’t look for praise or compliments but still puts in the work the best he can. So to my father I wish him and all dedicated fathers a Happy Fathers Day!
