Elegy of Gali

I wrote this over a year ago before my cat Gali died. I had this cat for 19 years. so almost my whole life. Before she died I knew the end was coming and stayed up worrying about it. this is the result. I am posting it now because I feel like it might be able to help others with grief over death.
-------------------------------------------------------

I’m sorry. I am sorry that there is nothing I can do to help you. You sit blissfully unaware as I lose sleep. What a joke, some might find it funny that I am getting so worked up over this.

My life span is almost five times as long as yours. I saw you being born, I watched with the eyes of an adult, and with those same eyes I will watch you die. Life is so fleeting. Days seem to drag on like years, yet years fly by in seconds. I blink and you are fully-grown, I blink again and you have been dead for months.

I feel like god watching mortals. This is the only time I have heard of being god as a bad thing. I watch you grow up and grow strong and have the burden to watch you slowly weaken. The frailty of your life reminds me of the inevitable nature of my own.

I cry because I don’t want to lose you, then I continue to cry because I don’t want to die. The irony is that despite my long life span and vast knowledge, it is you that comforts me. You don’t know why I am upset but you want me to feel better. Actually I can’t imagine how you must see the world. Living a comparatively short life, completely ignorant of death and disease.

Maybe it is you who should feel bad for me. After all, you are the one asleep and I am the one writing this down at 2am.

Standing against the rain

I stand in the pouring rain, staring ahead, stern faced and shoulders tensed. I leave my hands relaxed to give the impression that I am just as relaxed. I put little effort into my relaxed disguise as my eyes cut holes in anything I look at.

The world is frequently chaotic and on fire, but today the world is pouring rain and the cobblestone beneath my feet falls away all around me. I see windows with warm yellow light emitting from them, inside the windows people are laughing, smiling and having conversations while other windows have people with calm faces and relaxed shoulders. No one can see me from their windows and no one bothers to look out into the rain.

In my mind I am brandishing a crowbar and have broken those smug windows with their warm glow pouring out of them. I have also broken the smiling faces of the ones sitting comfortably inside. Back in reality I do nothing but stare while life pushes on and the people in the windows live their lives, never noticing my existence or caring to see it.

Some people stand alone and invisible and those people have to stand the strongest. Occasionally a traveler might see me and help prop me up before walking off into the night but ultimately we are alone in this world.

There are times I feel guilty for even thinking about how lonely I am or how bad it feels to struggle with little or no support. The reality is that all humans are alone and the human race is a race of insecure and highly intelligent animals who shriek into the darkness and pretend everything is fine. There are varying degrees of shrieking in the darkness but the Grim Reaper comes for us all sooner or later and when shadow of death looms over you, that is when you will truly find out that money, lovers and “yes men” cannot save you.

The only certainty in life is death and taxes but death can’t be avoided.

I do not fear death, I have experienced pain in life and unless I am cast into the fiery pits of hell, I know death couldn’t be any worse than life. I will embrace a new life, an afterlife or the sweet release of oblivion. If there is no heaven then I will not have a consciousness to be bothered by it. The lights go out, the curtain falls and that’s all she wrote.

I do like to think there is more than this life but I am not in a hurry to find out. I would like to experience the bliss of heaven but living on earth the way I have, it is easier to believe in a hell than believe in a heaven. Still all the same, I believe in heaven despite everything.

So I endure the rain and the darkness, I take comfort in the little things and I curb my rage against others, even those who capitalize on the misfortune of others. Any time my mind decides that the only solution is violence, that is when I do nothing at all. I know that any action I took at that point would lead to something I might regret, or worse, something I would enjoy too much.

Virtus the Indomitable

“I have always been efficient and always on schedule. I need you to know this, so when tell you I have only failed once, you will understand the significance”

In the ancient times great kings would have their warriors compete for glory and honor. The best warriors of the land would strive for victory in single combat. These fights were not always to the death, but they were still brutal. One combatant stood out for his sheer force of will and indomitable spirit. This warrior was named Virtus.

Virtus fought for glory and honor like the other warriors but he also fought with a goal and determination to reach that goal. Virtus was from a small village, a village that was always plagued by bandits and raiders. The poor villagers did not have much to spare even before the bandits attacked. So Virtus grew up fighting, trying to protect his village. He felt responsible for the entire village even as a youth, so he would fight the raiders and even though he lost more than he won, he still fought on to show the human vultures of that land that his village was not easy prey. Virtus spent his life as the guardian of the village and as the years passed he grew up tall and strong. By the time he was a full-grown man he had as many scars on his body as he had muscles. The elder of the village told Virtus to leave and find a future for himself, as many of the villagers worried that protecting a few cattle and some grain would be his entire life. While everyone in the village felt blessed to have Virtus they knew it wouldn’t be right to let him shoulder the burden of the whole village by himself. So with a heavy heart the Elder of the village forced Virtus to leave. It wasn’t banishment but it was pretty close.

It didn’t take long for Virtus to discover the capital city and its giant gladiator arena that hosted fights every day and drew in crowds from all across the land. Once Virtus heard about the fame and gold that could be earned in the arena he made a promise to himself that he would become the champion of the arena and return to his village with enough gold to hire soldiers and repair the homes and farms. Virtus had once again put the people of his village back onto his shoulders and was determined to carry them to prosperity. Virtus was an orphan and when no one would care for him, it was the village and the elder that took him in when he was a small boy wondering the desert by himself.

Virtus fought with the ferocity of a lion during his time in the arena. As his number of victories grew he also accumulated nicknames and titles such as Indomitable Virtus and the Iron demon. He was called Iron demon because Iron was the strongest metal available and Virtus seemed un-killable like a demon would be.

Virtus roared with each swing of his sword, he swung his weapon wildly to throw his opponent off balance then rammed hard with his shield. The force of the strike broke the ribs of the enemy gladiator and the poor soul collapsed on the ground. Virtus yelled a guttural roar as the crowd cheered. Most fights would end quickly with the result always the same. Virtus standing victorious as his opponent lay dead or injured in the dust and sand. When Virtus did fight a powerful enemy the fights would last much longer, sometimes going on for hours until Virtus opponent collapsed from exhaustion. Whenever Virtus lost his breath, sustained injuries or was bleeding all over the arena, his inner drive would push him to continue. He would never back down and he would never fall to anyone.

Virtus was indomitable, fierce, strong willed and some believed he could not be killed, but he was a mortal despite what the arena patrons thought. Virtus died at the age of one hundred and twenty seven. He died while severing the king’s head from his shoulders. Virtus was mid-stroke with his sword, he had cleaved the King’s head straight off when a spear was driven through Virtus back, impaling him and going through his torso. This spear impaling was the final blow that killed him, but he had already sustained injuries from sword cuts and stab wounds and  burns from a flaming arrow that struck his shoulder.

The castle was in chaos as Virtus let out his last breath and fell to the stone floor next to the headless king. Virtus spirit stood above his body and watched as the soldiers continued to fight against the rebels that were led by Virtus. The show was interrupted for Virtus when a black-cloaked figure glided into the room. The world of the living melted away and only darkness remained. Death stood before Virtus and lifted a skeletal hand. “You have brought so much death that even I am impressed with your skills, but your time is over. Come with me” Echoed the voice of death. Virtus gritted his teeth “I follow no one!” Virtus shouted and charged at the grim reaper.

The spirit of Virtus grappled with the spirit of death itself. Virtus inner strength and will counted for just as much in the spirit world as it did in the mortal world. The Grim reaper was the master of death but struggled to keep Virtus at bay. The indomitable spirit fought Death for decades. Since time did not pass in the spirit would a decade of fighting would not have affected the mortal realm. The battle ended when Virtus wrestled Death’s scythe from the clutches of Death. Virtus struck the Grim reaper with its own weapon and send the spirit of Death to the afterlife. Death was banished from that realm in between the mortal world and the afterlife. The spirit world or Limbo was now the domain of Virtus.

Death’s scythe vanished in a cloud of black smoke seconds after Death was thrown from this plane of existence. Death had no trouble navigating the afterlife and finding his way back to Limbo. When Death returned to the spirit world Virtus was gone, he had escaped back into the mortal realm and was reborn into the world as a baby of a merchant’s wife.

Virtus lived as a son of a merchant unaware of his past life as a gladiator or his battle with Death. Virtus didn’t even know his original name and when he was born back into the world he was given the name William Merchant. William grew into a strapping young man who had more strength and determination than anyone else in town. William had a nice childhood and had no reason to have an unshakable will and the urge to fulfill his goals, but he had the spirit of Virtus and while he had no memory of his former life, his past was permanently marked on his soul and every incarnation of Virtus would have the same Indomitable will as the original Virtus. Some incarnations were more violent while others were more peaceful
William Merchant grew up to be a successful sailor and merchant and when his ship was taken by the king for unpaid taxes, William became a pirate who targeted the kings royal ships and any merchant who vowed loyalty to the king. William wasn’t just any pirate, he became the most feared and successful pirate who had ever lived. He eventually died when he ship in a head on collision with the King’s military flagship. William had left his entire crew back at town and sailed the ship himself with hull full of gunpowder and dynamite. When William’s ship collided with the King’s flagship the gunpowder was ignited torches lit directly above the gunpowder barrels. The explosion killed the top general and his best men as well as destroyed the front half of the flagship.

Virtus’ spirit evaded the Grim Reapers grasp every time one of his incarnations died. Virtus spirit lived on through dozens of humans over the ages.

“It was the only time I ever failed. Virtus was the only soul I never collected” Explained Death. The grim reaper stood looming over a fourteen-year-old boy, Death’s voice boomed and echoed through the air. “ Why are you telling me this?” John Pharris the boy who survived the grave wagon attack and the only human who could walk freely through the haunted forest. “I am telling you this because Virtus’ spirit fuels the Grave Wagon, and I cannot stop it” Explained Death. John’s eyes went wide and he felt like he had been kicked in the stomach, he took a step backward and fell backward landing on his butt. The ground was cold and hard, the dark green grass prickled at him through his pants. Death over John, they both were in the deepest and darkest part of the Haunted forest, a second of the forest that was reserved for Death and no mortal or monster had ever entered. “If you can’t beat him, how am I supposed to beat him? How is anyone supposed to beat him?” Asked John is disbelief.

Death crouched down and sat on a tree stump. “You need to face the Indomitable will with your own equally unwavering spirit. Use the magic that the Grave Wagon gave you” Death explained.

John looked up at Death “where does this magic come from?” He asked as he touched the shadowy side of his face. “I’ll tell you but it will be another long story” Death replied.

Note: Thanks for reading!! I hope to finish my Halloween series by Halloween night. I hope everyone is enjoying the grave wagon stories. I also plan to write stand alone stories about Virtus life and William Merchants life, as I thought they were really interesting after I wrote them but had to gloss over their lives to tell the larger story.

Joseph Stephens and the final day part 3

Joseph Stephens and Jaye Williams ran down into the subway, the air was cool and the small lights built into the ceiling didn’t provide much light. They were drenched with rain and wind blew into the subway entrance from outside. A mysterious storm was brewing in the city of Ales and the two friends were on the hunt for a 5 foot tall mouse woman with sharp claws and fangs. The Mouse lady ate humans and lived in the subway, she was quiet about her business though and a few disappearances a year never alerted the larger population.

Joseph pulled the Serpents dagger from his gray coat, Jaye was pulling candies from the pockets of his hoodie. The two friends walked down the stairs slowly as they listened for any unusual noises. The normal buzzing of people talking all at once while they waited for their train. The subway trains screeched and rattled as they zoomed by. Joseph realized he wouldn’t get anyone by listening for the Mouse lady, they had to hurry and find her. She was a giant mouse and would stand out in a crowd.

Joseph took off running through the subway corridors as his eyes scanned through the crowds of people for anything unusual. A shriek was heard and Joseph went running to find the source. A woman was screaming and a man was quaking in fear. “what happened?” Asked Joseph. The woman pointed at the train doors as they were closing. Jaye pulled out a crowbar and wedge it into the doors while Joseph squeezed onto the train. Jaye went to enter the train but the doors snapped shut and the subway train took off without him. “Ya lousy subway! You’ll hear from my lawyer!” Shouted Jaye, who then threw his claw hammer at the train as it took off. The hammer dented the back subway car and then fell into the tracks.

Joseph readied his weapon as he walked through the subway car. All the seats were empty and everything was quiet except for the screeching of the metal wheels as they zoomed along the tracks. As Joseph walked closer to the driver’s car the screeching grew louder. This was the loudest subway train Joseph had ever been on and the emptiest one too.  The driver’s door flung open as Joseph approached it. The driver was dead in his chair and the mouse lady was covered in blood. She was screeching as she chewed on the severed arm of the driver. The train was making normal noises but the loudest noise was not the subway cars wheels but the mouse monster as it fed on human flesh.

Joseph sprung forward with his serpent dagger. The mouse lady charged forward as well. When the two collided the mouse lady easily trampled over Joseph. The mouse monster wasn’t larger than Joseph but her strength and speed were super human.

Joseph was knocked to the ground but held his dagger tightly. The mouse lady let out a blood curdling shriek, her yellow eyes flashed with a murderous glare, her fangs dripped with human blood and her claws were raised up ready to strike. Joseph had to moved quickly but the mouse lady was faster than he was.

Joseph charged at the mouse with his shoulder out, keeping his dagger low so she couldn’t spot it. Joseph tackled into the mouse lady and the creature bit down onto Josephs shoulder. Blood spilled out over Joseph’s shirt and down his neck. Pain shot through him and he wanted to collapse from shock. He tried to bear the pain and gripped his dagger tightly. The mouse creature’s fangs sunk so deeply into Joseph’s shoulder that he could feel the fangs scratch his shoulder bone. His vision went dark and he began to tremble. He used all of his strength to push his dagger forward into the mouse monster.

Joseph stabbed the mouse lady with the serpent dagger using both hands. The poison of the dagger entered the mouse lady’s veins immediately. Joseph was released from the deathly bite and he collapsed to the ground. He dropped the dagger and tried to stop the bleeding by ripping his shirt to make a bandage.

The poisoned mouse lady twitched and fell to the floor. Joseph slowly stood up and stumbled over to the drivers seat and pulled the emergency break. The train screeched to a halt and Joseph was thrown forward and hit his head on the console.

Joseph woke up to the gentle voice of his friend Jaye Williams “You have all of the grace and finesse of a dead cow” He laughed. Joseph rubbed his head and slowly stood up. “How did you find me?” Joseph asked feeling woozy. “Your subway car was on a track, I followed the track. Also I had to get my claw hammer” Jaye replied.

The mouse lady was dead and the only foe remaining was the half man, half dog, swordsman, known as Dishonored dog. Joseph was relieved and needed time to recover from battle. Jaye was tired from walking and needed a donut to recover from exercise

The Duel on Wolf Peak

The winter festival was fast approaching, it was a time to celebrate and eat one last big meal before the harshness of deep winter set in. All throughout the land people would hang colorful lanterns, cook delicious roasts with herbs and eat the last fresh vegetables of the year. The approaching months would be a time to preserve and conserve on food and resources so the winter festival was seen as a bright, colorful and loud firework in the sky before the dead of night set in. To the people living in the town of Wolf Peak it was one of the biggest holidays of the year. Wolf Peak was located in the White Mountains and the White Mountains had the harshest winds and coldest winters in all of the land. By the middle of winter Wolf Peak would be completely trapped by snow and deadly winds. The towns in the low lands could leave their house and even travel in an emergency if they had to. The people of Wolf Peak were confined to the town, cut off from the rest of the world for three months.

During the Winter Festival people would prepare for the long winter ahead or just leave town and head for the lowlands, where the winters were shorter and less severe. The only saving grace that Wolf Peak had was the shelter of the Respite caves. Long tunnels and man made caves that bore deep into the mountain were known as the Respite caves, the town of Wolf Peak was built inside of the caves. Villagers wouldn’t be snowed into their houses but they were completely trapped inside of the mountain. The villagers who lived in Wolf Peak all year had a close bond with each other. After a year of relying on your neighbor you start to see your neighbor as a brother or sister.

Soft music echoed out from the town and warm lights could be see shining in the Respite caves. People were celebrating, preparing for the night of the Winter Festival and preparing for the long winter afterward. While most celebrated there were those who had other matters that needed their attention. In such a peaceful and joyous time there were those who insisted on fighting.

Clashing swords rang out through the mountains, two men stood facing each other in a duel to the death. The bitter cold winds of the White Mountain Pass blew through the combatants but they both stood unmoving. One fighter was wearing all black armor, a black helmet that was rounded at the top and came to a point in the front, a long red scarf wrapped tightly around the neck, carried a long sword and shield and had a battle axe on his back. The first fighter was known as the Vanguard and had more than a few legends.

The second fighter was known as Sir Gregory Andrews, a former knight who apposed his king and was thrown out of the castle and stripped of his honor and title. Sir Andrews was more recently known as Gregory the knight mercenary. Sir Gregory Andrews had medium length messy brown hair. A trimmed goatee that was starting to grow out and looked like it hadn’t been maintained in a few weeks. He wore silver armor that he owned from his days as a knight, the armor used to shine brightly like a star but it hadn’t been cleaned or polished in a while. Gregory used to have a helmet but the King had taken it away because it had the Kingdom seal on it. Even though his kingdom branded him a traitor he still tried to be noble in everything he did but also needed to eat and many of Sir Andrews’ deeds had not been noble as of late. Gregory knew the Vanguard was wanted by the king and figured if he captured the black armored villain then his good name would be restored and the King might even forgive him for all that treason stuff.

Few people knew why the Vanguard was a wanted criminal and even less knew who the Vanguard even was. Sir Andrews didn’t care though, he needed to return to his noble statues and was running out of ways to get back on the King’s good side. Gregory charged at the Vanguard with his two handed sword, Gregory’s dirt covered silver armor clanked against the stone with every step.  The Vanguard did not react to Gregory’s sudden charge, the dark night just stood like a statue, firm and unwavering. Sir Andrews swung his sword, swinging it downward with all of his strength. The Vanguard moved with unnatural speed moments before the sword struck his armor. The Vanguard moved out of the way and in one motion slammed his shield into Gregory’s chest. The blow from the shield struck with such force that it knocked Gregory off of his feet and sent him backward into the snow.

Gregory struggled to get to his feet as he clutched his chest and tried to breath again. The strike was so strong that Sir Andrews was lucky he didn’t have internal bleeding. “Why do you wish to fight me?” Asked the Vanguard, his voice echoed through his helmet and sounded almost inhuman. “I need to bring your head to my King. You are a villain with a price on your head” Gregory said as he held his sword up again. “I am wanted in many kingdoms, but I am not a villain. I do not want to kill you, but I will defend myself. If your honor commands you to slay me then you risk your life in trying to do so” The Vanguard said as he sheathed his sword, tied his shield to his back and pulled his two handed axe from its holster on his back.

Sir Andrews held his sword tightly, he didn’t want to keep fighting, he felt out matched by this nightmare of a knight, but he couldn’t live another day as a mercenary. “If I kill you my honor will be restored, I cannot live without my honor. I won’t live another day as a dog” Said Andrews as he charged again. He swung his sword downward like before and the Vanguard crouched down to start a counter attack, knowing that the Vanguard would counter Gregory didn’t put all of his weight into his sword like last time and instead brought his knee up as his sword came down. The Vanguard tried to react but was kneed in the head. Gregory was able to bring his sword down on the now dazed Vanguard. The sacrifice was that his sword slash was not as powerful as it normally would have been.

The Vanguard tumbled backward into the snow with a fresh slash in his armor. “Your supposed ‘honor’ binds you to your king like a dog. The kingdoms hate me because I am truly free. I have honor, I spare the weak and I do not resort to cheap tricks, but I am hated because I do not let others use my honor to chain me down” The Vanguard said, his words rang out, echoing with each word. The words stung Sir Andrews as he thought back to the things he did to survive all the while hoping to regain the King’s favor and his precious honor. “Enough talk, I will finish you here and now!” Gregory said as he stabbed his sword down on the Vanguard who was starting to stand back up.

The Vanguard couldn’t react fast enough and the sword plunged through the shoulder joint in the armor were there was little protection. The Vanguard’s armor had weak spots and joints in it for increased mobility. The weakness in the Vanguard’s armor had been exploited and blood dripped from the shoulder joint and down the Vanguard’s hand as his blood spilled out through his armor. “So you are a man after all. So many stories were told of you being a demon or a specter that haunted a suit of armor” Said Sir Gregory with triumph.

The Vanguard’s armor began to glow and pulsing red light vibrated from the black metal plates. Gregory stepped back as the Vanguard stood up. “I am none of those things. What I am, is your death” Said the Vanguard, his voice echoing from his helmet in a rage. Icy wind blew over the two combatants and the snow began to blow in from the north. The winter storms were growing more intense and if the battle lasted much longer both the Vanguard and Gregory would freeze to death.

The Vanguard took off his helmet and threw it into the snow. Gregory Andrews was take back by what he saw. The Vanguard lifted his axe with one hand as his other arm lay limp. Before Gregory could react the Vanguard had moved forward four feet in a blink and was mid attack. Gregory only blinked once and then saw the Vanguard raising his axe into the air and then down onto Sir Gregory’s shoulder. The axe slashed through Sir Andrews’ armor and cut a chunk into his shoulder, upper torso and ribcage. Sir Gregory Andrews coughed up blood and stared at the Vanguard with a hazy vision.

A woman with jet black hair, burning red eyes and skin as white as the snow stared at Gregory with intense hatred. “You lived like a dog, chained to your master. Now this is where you die, cold, alone and forgotten” Said the Vanguard, her gaze harsher than the winter winds of the White Mountain. The Vanguard picked up her helmet, placed it back onto her head and walked off, blood dripping from her arm and leaving a trail behind her. Soon she disappeared into the wind and snow of the mountain and Sir Gregory was left alone. Blood poured from his wounds and he began to lose consciousness. Faint music was heard from the town of Wolf Peak and Gregory smiled. The Winter Festival was starting and Gregory wondered were he would be right now if he hadn’t chased after the King’s favor like mad dog.

Gregory closed his eyes, music played softly like a lullaby and then soon faded. The sound of the wind disappeared and the cold could no longer be felt.  The Winter Festival was fast approaching and everyone was busy celebrating.

Assault on the Dark Spire part 2

The Necromancer stood up as blood gushed from his wounds. The Ancient dark magic staff had expended all of its energy, but the evil staff had a mind of its own and was determined to retake as much energy as it could. The staff began to absorb the dark power of the Haunted forest, the cursed clearing, the undead minions and the Necromancer himself. Dark energy swirled around the Necromancer but he refused to give up the staff even though it was killing him. He held it tight against his body as the dark energy stripped the flesh and organs from his bones. The undead minions all collapsed to the ground and their souls were released into the air. The demons of the Haunted forest fled from this realm as they feared their energy would be drained from the mad Staff’s power.

The Mayor could barely stand and had to watch the madness unfold as he struggled to his feet. When the energy and flashing light faded the Necromancer stood before the Mayor as a skeleton. The Skeleton was fused with the power of the staff. The Staff held his magic, his life force and his soul and the Necromancer held the Staff. It was even more important to him now than it had ever been.

The mayor couldn’t fight and even if he could he didn’t know how to kill a skeleton wizard with so much power. The Mayor stood up defiantly. He didn’t think he could win, but he had to try. He had to fight, even with his last breath. “Foolish Mortal. I have been reborn. I am the most powerful undead wizard of all time. I have been reborn as a Lich and my power surpasses all. I have power over death itself!!” The Lich Shouted. At that moment Death appeared. The Grim reaper wore a black cloak and carried a scythe, he floated in front of the Lich and his cloak seemed to fade into the shadows. “As a mortal you tried to bend the laws of life and death to your will, you twisted the laws of reality to match your selfish desires. I cannot take mortals before their time so I had to sit and watch as you sinned against nature. But you are no longer mortal, you are an abomination that claims to have powers over me. Alright then Abomination, do your worst” Death said, its voice came from the air and not its skeletal mouth. Each word that Death spoke echoed and sent chills down The Mayor’s spine.

The Lich wasted no time and held out his staff sending his strongest spell at the Grim Reaper “Lord of Death, you shall bow to me!” Shouted the Lich as the magic of the staff blasted the Grim Reaper and surrounded him. Death spun his scythe through the air and the magic spell dissipated. “Fool” Death said then in a blink was next to the Lich, then in another blink the Grim Reaper had slashed his Scythe through the Lich.

The Lich was thrown back and damaged but was not destroyed. His life force was safe within the Staff. The Lich was quite possibly immortal, but he was not stronger than Death itself. The Grim Reaper summoned a dark portal below the Lich. Shadowy hands rose up from the portal and grabbed onto the Lich, dragging him down into the ground. The Lich screamed as the shadow hands pulled him into his dark prison deep down into the earth. The ground shook and the Lich slowly disappeared underground.

“Thank so much” the Mayor said as his voice quaked with fear. He knew Death was a natural force and not a villain like the Lich, but it was still terrifying to be in its presence. Death nodded to the Mayor “You have also contributed to this victory young Mayor. You and John Baines” Said Death. “What will happen to the Necromancer? Or the Lich or whatever he calls himself” Asked the Mayor “He will be sealed underground for eternity. But I fear he will regain his power one day and return. He will return but will need to use all of his energy to do so. Only then will he be able to be destroyed once and for all. So I hope that there will be mortals as brave as you when that happens” Death explained.

“I want to be there when he comes back. I will do anything to make sure the Necromancer doesn’t come back to destroy the world” The Mayor said. The Grim Reaper was surprised “it is within my power to do this but there is a price. You will be immortal, free from dying of old age, but you can still be killed by other means. Also you will only be immortal while standing on these Hallowed grounds. You may leave the forest to see your family, but as you reach the end of your life you must never leave the forest or you will die the second your foot touches the outside world” Death explained.

The Mayor was overjoyed to have a chance to protect his people and the people of the world. “Thank you so much for this chance, I will not let it go to waste. I promise. But these grounds are not hallowed or holy, are they?” Asked the Mayor. “Yes, this was once the burial site of many heroes of the ages. This was the site for the heroes of not just the Autumn Forest but of many lands as well. The Necromancer corrupted that energy and turned it to dark energy. The land and forest will be forever scarred, the Haunted forest will be free from demons but the spirits and creatures of the night still lurk within. The land will remain blackened and twisted but the dark energy has been removed and sealed within the staff. This land is once again a holy land, the burial site of heroes and many dead who lost their lives to the Necromancer” Death Explained.

“Speaking of Heroes” Death said. Then appeared next to John’s body. “Arise John Baines, you have not left his world yet” Death said. The mayor watched a ghost of John appear and step back into his body. John’s eyes opened and he slowly stood up. “John you have done well. I know you have heard what the Mayor has asked of me. I ask you now, do you wish to join him in guarding this land or will you move on to the afterlife?” Asked Death.

“I wanted to be free for so long. Now I am free from the Necromancer’s curse and I feel as though a weight has been lifted. I would very much like to go to the afterlife, but I cannot rest as long as the threat of the Lich is still present” John said. “Very well John. I will make you immortal as long as you stay within this land. Magical weapons and spells can still kill you but you have nothing to fear from mortal weapons. Since you have already used up your lifespan you cannot ever leave this forest and if you do, you will die. When you and the Mayor die you will go to afterlife and welcomed as heroes” Death explained. John and the Mayor nodded to show they understood.

“Before I leave, I will bestow one more gift” Said Death. The Grim Reaper floated over to the ground where the Lich was buried and stuck his finger into the ground, pulled it out then dropped a small seed into the earth and buried it. “This plant will sap the Lich’s power, delaying his return and making him more vulnerable. The plant will grow over the years and it will transform the dark magic of the Lich and the land into the holy energy this land once had. After a time the land might actually recover and become a place of beauty again. What the plant grows into is entirely up to you. It will take any form you wish. But protect it with your lives” Death said. Then before John or the Mayor could say anything, the Grim Reaper vanished.

John walked over to the seed and looked down at it. “It can grow to anything? What should we grow it into?” Asked John. “I have always been fond of Halloween, the people in the Autumn forest never get into it as much as I do. Maybe we can grow it into a symbol of our victor, a symbol of a new holy land of the dead, a symbol for Halloween. What do you think, John?” The Mayor asked. “It sounds like you want to grow a Jack-o-lantern” John said with a sigh then smiled. His smile was determined but a little frightening “If we are going to live in this hallowed end of the world and grow a Jack-o-lantern as a symbol, then I guess you can call me Jack” Said Jack, his broad smile and wide eyes combined with the scars on his face really did make him look like a pumpkin that was carved on Halloween.

“Alright Jack, consider this your new life. And if we are going to start a new life and actually have to live here, we might as well make it more comfortable” the Mayor said. “What like build a house?” Asked Jack. “No, we build a town” Replied the Mayor.

Where my Dreams take me - part 6 The New Day

Jack stepped through the charred doorway of his former Boss’ office. The office was untouched by flames and was just as flashy and awful as Jack remembered. “Jack my boy, such wonderful new powers you have. I think we can work out a deal. You keep working for me and I will forgive you for killing all of my guards” The Boss said calmly.

Jack smiled, he grinned ear to ear as he walked forward slowly. “Deals? We are making deals now?” Asked Jack, his smile still wide and frightening. He slowly sat down on a crimson leather chair across from the Boss. Jack leaned over the Boss’ desk and looked him in the eye. “You will forgive me? Forgive me? FORGIVE ME?!” Jack said his voice jumped into a shout toward the end. Jack cleared his throat and brushed his hair back. “You should be begging me to spare your life and you sit here making deals? You should be asking ME to forgive YOU!” Jack said, his voice jumping as he barely contained his anger. “I would never make a deal with you, but I did make a deal with someone else. Someone who wants you dead just as much as I do” Jack said as he looked the Boss right into his beady dark brown eyes. “Who would have the nerve to send you after me? And while I am asking questions, where did you get that magic?” The Boss asked. He didn’t move from his chair, but he was slowly becoming uncomfortable.

Death slowly appeared into view behind Jack. A floating cloaked skeleton holding a scythe appeared as a response to the Boss’ question. Then a second later Death was gone. Jack didn’t see Death but he assumed the Boss did by his changed expression. All of the color drained out of the Boss’ face when he saw the Grim Reaper.

Jack stood up and lifted his hammer to strike but the Boss acted quickly and shot Jack point blank with his shotgun. Jack froze and his eyes went wide. He had come so far only to let his guard down for a second and to get killed by the same person and the same gun that killed Isabelle. Everything seemed to slow as Jack looked down to check for damage. As he looked down he saw the Boss was horrified instead of pleased. Green flames spilled out of Jack’s chest and stomach. The flames covered his torso instead of blood. Magical flames moved across Jack’s skin but instead of burning him, they were healing the skin. The flames that dripped to the ground burned a hole in the floor.

Jack looked at the Boss and smiled “Death sends his regards” then launched forward and grabbed the Boss by the throat. Green flames burned brightly in Jack’s eyes as rage filled his body. Jack lifted the Boss up by his throat and hurled him through the back wall. As the Boss’ body soared through the air like a rag doll Jack lifted his hammer and then flung it forward. The hammer flew straight out and hit the Boss, then engulfed the Boss in flames. The Hammer and the Boss’ body dropped to the ground with a thud. Jack couldn’t see where the Boss landed because it was dark and also his body was sent out past the city limits.

Jack jumped out through the hole in the wall down three floors and hit the ground. Jack landed on his feet and took off running. This part of Dark city was the section unlucky enough to be built on the edge of the Haunted Forest. Jack approached the forest, which was swarming with spirits and weird glowing eyes that looked on from every shadow. Jack didn’t want to go anywhere near that place. “Halloween night is almost upon us Jack. Halloween is when the Haunted forest grows restless and the spirits become visible and the monsters more aggressive” Death whispered. The Haunted forest was always dangerous, but the development of Dark city riled up the inhabitants of the forest and with Halloween approaching the spirits were even more restless.

The boss was standing on the edge of the Haunted forest, too afraid to run into the forest to escape Jack, but too afraid of Jack to distance himself from the forest. Jack approached “Not dead yet? Good, more fun for me” Jack said as he walked closer, his hammer burned brightly as Jack approached. Jack lifted his hammer off the ground and held it up with one hand. “J-Jack please, I can bring her back! I can help you. Don’t kill me” The Boss said his human skin dripped from his face revealing red demon skin. Small yellow horns poked out from under his black hat and his eyes glowed yellow. Jack sneered and shot another blast of fire at the Boss.

The flames burned the Boss’ clothes and melted away his human disguise.
The Boss stood five feet five and was now in his true form. He was still overweight but his skin was scaly and red, his mouth was a large gaping maw and his eyes burned bright like fire. “Disgusting” Jack muttered. The Boss pulled a black gem from his torn suit pocket. He smiled and held it up. “I saved this gem for supernatural opponents, it cancels magic. Since magic is holding you together right now, prepare to be torn apart. The Gem shot out a blast of energy at Jack. Jack threw his hammer at the blast and jumped out of the way. The Hammer and the dark blast collided and caused an explosion. Black, red and green flames shot over Jack’s head as he lay flat on the grass. The Boss was blasted backward into the Haunted forest.

“He’s going to escape!” Jack shouted. “No, he is not” Death replied. The glowing eyes went out and the spirits that floated around the trees rushed into the forest. Everything that Haunted that forest seemed to move in on the Boss as soon as he landed. Screams echoed out of the forest accompanied by the sounds of bones breaking and meat being torn.

It was over, Jack had his revenge, and the Boss was dead. Death appeared in front of Jack in the form of a young woman. She was very pale and slender, she wore all black and had long black hair that flowed into her black dress. She walked toward Jack and smiled “You have done well” She said with a kind smile. Death knelt down and picked up the Hammer with ease. “The stories this hammer could tell…” She said as her voice drifted off. Death stared at the hammer as if it was telling her all of its amazing stories.

“What do I do now?” Asked Jack as he lifted himself up. “I want a peaceful life, I want to be done with this nightmare. Am I even human anymore? What was that green fire inside of me?” Jack added. Death sighed “The hammer’s magic kept you alive. MY hammer kept you alive. Now that you have given it to me, you are as mortal and human as before. Now you can go build your life. It is yours for the taking. Do as you wish with this freedom. The mountaintop, the autumn forest, maple town and even a black cat all wait for you in your future. The traveling and building is up to you” Death explained. “Thank you, Jack” Death added with a smile then vanished from sight.

Jack felt sore, tired and hungry. Before he left Dark city forever he decided to pay a visit to Old Carl and see if he could make him some food for old times sake.

Jack stumbled as he walked back into the city, leaving the sights and sounds of the Haunted Forest behind him. As he approached the city he saw a black cat with green eyes. It was just a kitten, it was lost and alone and rummaging through a garbage can for food. Jack walked up to the cat and put his hand out to pet it. Despite living on the street, the cat was friendly and trusting enough to let Jack pet him. Jack saw an old can of pumpkin puree in the garbage and smiled at the dirty logo of a pumpkin patch. The black cat bit down on the can but then reared its head back when it realized the can wasn’t edible.

“Would you like to come with me? I’m homeless too” Jack told the cat. The cat mewed and began to purr. “Have you ever been to the mountains? I hear they are lovely this time of year” Jack said as he picked up his new cat and placed it on his shoulders. “I am going to call you Karu, if that’s alright” Jack said. Karu meowed.

Jack and Karu walked through Dark city, toward the Lousy Dame bar. The rain had stopped, the sun was rising and Jack had a brand new life ahead of him.

Where do your Dreams go?

Where do your dreams go when you die?

I have never been one to fear death. I’ve led a life of hardships and pain, both physical and emotional. My life has not been all bad but my worst experiences could be written and sold as horror stories. When nightmares consume your childhood what is so fearsome about death? Nothing. Death scares the young and the healthy. People have their reasons why they want to live but the real reason is primitive survival. The human brain in all of its complexity still operates from basic desires. A human wants to live so that it can reproduce and make more humans. All species need this urge to survive. Growing up sick and in pain alters your brain. Its natures way of saying “You wont reproduce so death is ok. You are allowed to die” This might sound cruel but anyone who has seen a nature documentary will know its true. Nature effects humans just the same as it effects animals.

I am now afraid to die and strive to live. One day I found a light in the darkness. It was a boundless imagination that led me to my love of fantasy. I played in the fictional worlds of others. Humans created video games and books, they used their brains for something more than basic desires. They created these worlds and I was lost and entranced. In these worlds the hero won, the darkness could be fought and if you believe hard enough nothing can stop you. Memories of life funneled through creative process and turned into dreams. The Dreams written down and turned into fiction and the fiction sold and consumed. Once consumed the fiction is released back into dreams and stimulates the mind. The mind then begins to create its own dreams and its own fiction. What if that tree was sixty feet tall and contained an entire village of elves? Its not sixty feet tall and only birds live in it, but what if? What if the world was a better and more magical place? What if people got along? What if trying your best actually made a difference? The thoughts in your brain turn and focus. Your experiences color both your fantasy and reality. How you perceive people depends on how you were raised just like if I told you to imagine a drugtor you might think of something totally different than someone else. Others may just realize Drugtor is a word I just made up and not bother imagining anything.

So where DO dreams go when you die? And why does my ability to imagine a dragtor make me want to live?

Well I honestly do not know where dreams go and that is why I fear death. In my head I have my memories, story ideas, characters, dreams, goals and a whole library of random animal trivia. Its precious to me, I can recall times that I spent with my friends or family, moments long since passed that my brain keeps preserved for as long as I live. Happy moments and memories that make me smile to this day. I can create fictional worlds and characters in a day, I can imagine those places and if I close my eyes I can see every single place I have ever written about. I fear death because when a person dies, what happens to those precious memories and all of the stories they haven’t written yet? My fear is that they simply go away forever.

Great authors through the ages wrote stories that are still read and enjoyed hundreds of years later, but what happened to the stories they didn’t write? All of the possible life they could have breathed into the world is now gone. All that remains is their stories, echoes of a mind that could create anything out of nothing.

I do not fear not existing, not breeding, not being able to eat hamburgers, I fear not being able to tell stories.

So what if I had to answer to my own question? What if I just wrote a happy ending? What if?

When you die your dreams live on with you. The stories you wrote continue to entertain the living but all of the worlds you create in your head, the characters that are all secretly part of your own personality, your dreams, your wishes and all of the memories you hold so dear from your life, they go with you. They all travel with you to the next world.  a world of peace and happiness and a world where the heroes won, the darkness could be fought and if you believe hard enough nothing can stop you.

I'd Kill for

The light of the moon shined down and reflected off the metal of a handgun. The gun was held out by a shadowy figure wearing a trench coat and hat. The gun was pointed at a scared middle-aged man holding a box. The box carrying man was pleading for his life as he stood in a dark alley at gunpoint.

Behind the gunman was a pair of bright red eyes and pale white fangs. These eyes and fangs belonged to a demon who was hiding in the shadows. The silhouette of the demon showed large wings, claws and horns, but only the gunman could see the demon. Being at gunpoint scared the middle-aged man enough, it was for the best that he couldn’t also see a demon lurking in the shadows.

The trench coat wearing gunman stood motionless as he kept his gun pointed at his victim’s head. as the victim pleaded the gunman never replied. The street was quiet and there was no one around to witness this crime. “Do iit…” said the demon in a slow hiss. Only the gunman heard the demon’s voice. The gunman smiled and his glasses reflected the moonlight. The sound of a single gunshot rang out through the alley. The middle-aged man was face down dead.

“Now claim it” Hissed the demon. The gunman smiled like a madman as he walked toward the box. Slowly he opened it, lifting the lid and looked inside. “Perfect, extra cheese with pepperoni” Said the gunman as he viewed his prize.

            An hour earlier-
Dave sat on his couch flipping channels he was getting hungry. The day went by and he had barely eaten anything. He decided to order some take-out food, but then realized he was dead broke for another week. He was getting hungrier by the minute and the ads on tv for pizza weren’t helping.
“Man, I would kill for some pizza right now” David said as he covered his face in frustration.

Just then a demonic figure appeared behind David’s couch. “Reeally?…” Asked the voice in a low hiss.

Death and Bones (1 of 2)

The Tradewind had departed from the shores of the autumn forest. The beautiful trees and cool, crisp air was as inviting as any of the Tradewind crew had seen. Unfortunately the new discovery was ruined by the sudden appearance of skeleton knights. The pirates turned traders walked into a town after it had been attacked, all the villagers had either run off or been dragged away and the Tradewind crew barely escaped with their lives.

John Baines was checking the ship for damage and inspecting the crates of fruit they managed to salvage before the skeletons ran them off. His boots creaked on the wooden deck of the ship, the sound of waves was constant and soothing and even though they were no long on land, they still could smell the fresh air of the autumn forest as it mixed with the wind that came from the sea.

After a few hours of inspection, John returned to the captain. Captain Mohardy sat on the upper deck by the help, peering out at the sea. “The ship is in good condition and we got a two crates of apples before our escape” John reported. Captain Mohardy smiled “Good work my boy, good work”

The ship took almost no damage and the crew was able to salvage some of the delicious apples from the autumn forest. Mohardy was a tough sea captain, but he spent so much time with his crew and regarded them as family, so even though John delivered good news, the captain couldn’t hold his smile for too long. Before the crew escaped, the skeletons knights killed one of the sailors. John felt bad because he didn’t even know the guys name, but the captain was mourning as if he had lost a son. John left the captain in silence and went back to work.

As the ship sailed through the water, the wood of the ship creaked and the waves splashed against the sides. Mr.Peeps shouted from the crows nest. The air had grown cold and brutal and a storm began to form. Mr. Peeps shouted again. “Something is headed straight for us!” He shouted

The wind roared, the clouds grew dark and rain started to pour down on the ship. Mr. Peeps’ warnings were lost in the wind and the ship was hit by something big under the water. The Tradewind shook and some of the crew fell overboard. “All hands on deck!” Mohardy shouted. The crew tried to keep the Tradewind steady but they were all at the mercy of the storm. John held onto the rails as the ship was tossed around on the water. The storm was beating down all around them, then something in the water hit them again. The ship shook and the haul cracked open.

Land could be seen up ahead. The grass was dead, the trees were black and leafless and the air was bone chilling and foul. With every guest of wind that blew the branches of the trees bent forward like the outward reaching arms of death. John had survived storms before, but he had never seen a land so dark and evil that it made him want to stay out in a storm. His will did not matter though, the will of nature took control and the ship continued to take a beating. Captain Mohardy was seen trying to fasten ropes around his crew. He could barely stand without being thrown, but still he tried to save as many people as he could. John let go of the railing and tried to help the captain. “Captain!” John shouted. But his voice was swallowed by the raging sound of the storm. John shambled across the deck and stabbed his sword into the deck to steady himself. Before he could reach the captain a giant monster rose up from the depths.

The creature was a giant serpent, with black scales and glowing orange eyes. John was struck with fear, he had never seen a creature like this. Worse still was the serpents face. The scales and flesh was falling from its face and back. This sea snake was shedding its skin to reveal bone, not more skin. The undead sea snake reared back and then with lighting speed struck the side of the Tradewind. John was tossed overboard and before he hit the ice-cold water, he heard a loud cracking and snapping of wood and the screams of his crew as they plunged into the icy depths.

John’s world was now that of silence and darkness. Then he could hear the sound of waves crashing against the shore. How he loved the crisp blue water as it splashed against the golden sandy beach of his homeland. He remembered joining Captain Mohardy’s crew as a boy. Mohardy was a retired pirate, looking for a crew of upstanding sailors. He was trying to leave his old life behind and to do this he needed an honest crew. John was a boy of sixteen who dreamed of sailing. Crew came and went as the years went on. Every year or so the captain would say “Tired of the life at sea yet?” and John would always respond “Never”

John opened his eyes and saw dark blue water splashing against a shore of dead grass and gravel. The trees swayed in the freezing cold wind and any grass under John’s feet would be long dead. John stood up. He ran to the cursed shore and looked out into the sea. He was horrified to see the remains of the Tradewind sticking out of the water and clinging to jagged rocks that jutted out from the ocean depths. Seaweed and moss grew on the ship and the wood looked ancient. The raging storm and sea serpent destroyed the ship, but only time could age and weather the ship to this degree.

John looked down and he saw a skeleton stuck on a rock under a foot of water. The bones looked old and the ocean had washed away any traces of a face. He felt his heart sink and sadness engulfed him. He stumbled through the water and grabbed the skeleton. Captain Mohardy’s hat floated up from under the skeletons head. John recoiled in terror and fell into the water.

He stood up and climbed onto the shore. That’s when he saw a reflection of his face. His eyes glowed bright orange. Like a great burning Jack o Lantern, or like the sea serpent who attacked the Tradewind. John also had scars all over his face. The scars came from the time he spent on the bottom of the ocean as his face was sliced and bashed against jagged rocks. “Why didn’t I die? How much time has passed?” John muttered as he clutched his hand over his face.

“You reached the shore. You are the unlucky one. You reached the shore just before you died. While the Tradewind crew was able to depart for the afterlife, you were cursed by the darkness of this land” Said a voice.

“Who is that?!” John shouted. He pulled his sword from his sheath and raised it. his sword was jagged and bent. It was still sharp and could kill someone, but the jagged shape now reflected John’s cursed body. “I am death, who are you?” Said Death, who didn’t reveal itself, but its voice echoed. “I’m John…no, just call me Bones” John Bones said with a sneer.

Without a word, John Bones climbed the gravel shore and headed back into land. Something or someone was responsible for this curse and responsible for the attack on the Tradewind. Whoever was responsible was going to pay. John was no longer the honorable sailor he once was. He had become a ghost pirate, a spirit of vengeance and the bringer of death.

Nathan and the Haunted Forest (Part 1 of 2)

In the land of autumn and maple lived two young men. Stephen the goat farmer and Nathan the candy maker. These two were the best of friends and enjoyed their lives in the ever-lasting beauty of the autumn forest.

One night while Nathan was closing up his store he spotted a piece of candy on the ground. “I don’t remember dropping this” he said. He picked up the candy, unwrapped it and ate it. The flavor was magical to say the least. It was some kind of super refined maple candy and was better than anything he had ever made or tasted in his life. His eyes went wide and he looked around to see if there were anymore. It was strange because he was the only candy maker for miles, so it must have come from a traveler and dropped out of a bag.

To Nathan’s excitement he spotted another candy. “Sweetnesss!” He cheered and pounced onto the next piece of candy with cat like agility and excitement. Normally Nathan and Stephen would tell eachother about everything, especially if it was amazing mysterious candy, but Nathan was distracted as he kept finding more pieces and ended up following a trail. If he stopped for even a moment he would have realized the candy was set up as a perfect trail that was leading him right into the haunted forest.

This forest was dangerous to everyone and people from the autumn forest would only travel through the Haunted forest in groups and it was only one night a year, Halloween. On the other side of the Haunted forest was a joyous land were it looked like Halloween every day! The town was called Hallows end and had the biggest and best parties every year.

It might have been October, but Halloween was a few weeks away. So the Haunted forest was dark and didn’t have any guides or lights posted through it. Nathan followed the trail of delicious candy very intently, then the candy trail ended abruptly. Nathan frowned as he chewed a mouthful of Maple candy. No longer fixated on candy, he had time to look around. He realized immediately that he had walked right into the haunted forest and the exit was nowhere in sight.

Nathan let out a long sad sigh as he continued to eat the candy he had collected. Before Nathan could have time to ponder his fate a freezing cold wind blew through him and a large shadow moved quickly through the air. It moved like a giant bird but made the rustling sounds of a cloak in the wind. Then within a blink of an eye the Grim Reaper floated in front of Nathan. Death guided the dead to the after life and generally looked really cool with his skull face and flowing black cloak and hood.

“Are you here you here to kill me?” Nathan asked as he winced, making a face like he was about to be punched. “No…to use your terms. It is not, how I roll” Death said, its voice was deep and echoed through the air. Every word it spoke gave Nathan chills. “I’ve never said tha-“ Nathan started to say. Death put a single bone finger up to his mouth “Shhhh-Shuh-shuh-shuh“ Death shushed. Nathan stopped talking. He didn’t think this is how an interaction with death would go.
“How do I put this, I am just waiting for you to die. It saves time to follow you around” The Grim Reaper said. “I do not want to scare anyone away or make monsters think I am guarding you, so I will disappear for now but will remain close. Just give a bone chilling scream when you’re about to die” Death said then disappeared.

Nathan walked through the Haunted forest on high alert. He wasn’t about to let anyone get the jump on him. The forest was full of black and dark gray leafless trees. They were all twisted and looked ancient. When a cold wind blew the branches would sway and creak. Leaves rustled on the ground making it sound like someone was always behind Nathan and wolves, owls and crickets called into the night.

Nathan walked and walked until his feet began to hurt. Just as he grew too tired to walk anymore he noticed a small cottage up ahead. It was brick, with wood smoke drifting gently out of the chimney and warm lighting coming from the windows. The cottage was decorated with flowers and looked like the most inviting place in the whole world. “Hot-dog! Everything is coming up Nathan!” Nathan said then ran up to the house and knocked on the door. He hoped that if there was someone living in this forest than maybe they knew a way out.

A kindly old man and woman answered the door. “Hello?” the woman said with a sweet voice. She reminded Nathan of his grandmother back home and felt more at ease the more time he spent talking to her. “Hello, I am lost in this forest. Do you know the way out of here?” Nathan asked. The elderly man nodded and smiled.

“Oh yes, my husband seems to know. But you look so tired. Why don’t you come inside and rest while my husband gives you directions” The old woman said. Nathan was skeptical and had already walked into big enough trouble. “I really…better be going” Nathan said hesitantly. The old woman noticed candy wrappers by Nathan’s feet. “Do you like maple candy? I got a whole bag down in the basement for storage!” The old woman said. Nathan’s eyes lit up. “Oh you do?! I’ve been eating this mysterious maple candy and have been trying to find its source” Nathan said with a smile as the old couple led him into the house.

“Oh well my husband does all the shopping, but I am sure he would be happy to tell you. He does so love to talk and tell his stories…” the old woman said as Nathan and the old man went inside the house. The woman gave a quick look back and forth and then went inside the house, slamming the door shut.

The next sound that could be heard was the door locking….

Mac's Choice

Death sat silently next to Mac. Death looked like a young girl with cold eyes, her clothes black and almost shapeless like they were formed from shadows. Mac was a twenty something year old man with a red hoodie and a bad haircut. Mac palmed his face with one hand, in his other hand he held a gun. The two figures stood silently in an alleyway in a big city. It was a city full of people, yet Mac never felt so alone. With so many people jammed into a city, would anyone notice if someone went missing, or if someone died?

“I don’t know what you’re waiting for, the answers won’t come any clearer” Death spoke, her words so cold that it chilled the air. Mac hesitated and seemed uneasy. “you act like its not a big deal” Mac replied. “I see it every day, so to me, it isn’t
Death explained. Mac held his gun out and put it up to his head as his hands trembled. “Your life is pointless. What do you contribute to anything? You sedate your brain with television and beer, you work for a paycheck, not for the better of anything. Your paycheck only buys more television and beer. If you had any real friends you wouldn’t be standing in this alley with a gun, talking to yourself” Death explained. She reached out and ran a delicate finger down the side of Mac’s face. “Haven’t you ever heard of embracing death? I wonder why people don’t try it more” She said seductively. Her eyes just as icy cold as before, but her face was a fake pout as if trying to be cute. Mac looked at Death and cursed under his breath. Death wasn’t a women, it just decided to look this way for now. Even though the girl was pale and covered in black clothes and shadows, her dainty frame, round eyes and curves all made her rather attractive.

“You’re the devil!” Mac cursed, annoyed that Death was trying to seduce him into pulling the trigger. Death laughed “no my dear, I am not. If you ever meet the devil, you will know it instantly. Besides, I’m not making you do anything, I didn’t even lead you here to this alley. You bought a gun and walked here, I am here to collect you when your done” Death replied, sounding innocent.

Mac’s body continued to tremble. He didn’t want to die, but he had nothing to live for. Just being alive hurt. His body ached constantly and he was so lonely his emotional pain only seemed to add to his physical pain. He searched his mind for a reason to live, anything. He thought about friends, surely his buddies would miss him. They might at first, but their busy lives would sweep up their attention again. His family would miss him, but only because they liked to use him. He had a car and a little money so he would get phone calls when he was of use. Mac didn’t have a girlfriend and the last girl he dated was a bitch, adding to the list of bitches that Mac knew. He hoped not all women were terrible, but it was difficult to believe when he only met terrible people.

Mac didn’t have much going for him, so would he be throwing anything away if he died? People are born and others die, every single day. What is the worth of a human life, more importantly, what is the worth of Mac’s life? Mac didn’t have any answers. He didn’t want to die, he wanted his life to be better, but he didn’t know how to make it better and continuing on the same path wasn’t an option.

Mac tightened his grip on the gun as death watched, smiling softly to herself. Mac pulled the trigger and a shot range out. After one loud bang, the alley was quiet again. No one came running, no one noticed. The world moved on. The world continued to be a wonderful place for some and a terrible nightmare for others. Mac’s life had absolutely no impact on history, social events or the progress of the world. Yet if Mac’s life was so worthless why did Death show up personally to collect him? And when She did show up to see Mac hadn’t killed himself, why did she even care to persuade him?

Mac thought about all of these things before he pulled the trigger and when he finally did, the gun wasn’t aimed at his head, it was aimed at Death. Mac knew shooting Death wouldn’t do anything, but he made his point. Without saying a word, Death vanished, leaving Mac alone with his thoughts. He didn’t know what his life was worth now and maybe it wasn’t worth anything now, but he was determined to find out what it could be worth in the future and maybe he would then finally find something worth living for.

Arix and the sunken crypt

Arix walked slowly through the dark corridors of the underground tomb. Once he got into the sunken crypt he lowered himself down deeper into the giant hole in the floor of the crypt. Once he was underground he discovered that directly below the crypt was a tomb. The underground tomb also belonged to the Hidonon family. It was rumored that the family held many secrets and Arix was determined to find out what they were.

As he walked he heard faint whispers and sounds of footsteps deeper in the tunnels. Either some other adventurer got here before he did, or he was going to have to deal with another monster/creature that wanted to kill him. Oddly enough he was hoping it was a monster. It was much easier to deal with a cave creature than it was competing for glory with another adventurer. Having another adventurer around made the whole area seem less dangerous and took the thrill away also Arix wouldn’t be able to say he was the first one to explore the tunnels under the crypt. So he walked on, keeping his torch up and scanning the darkness for any sense of danger or competition.

The tunnels were lined with engravings and coffins that slid into little doors built into the walls of the tunnel. The engravings were mostly just peoples names and how old they were when they died, normal stuff you would find on a tombstone. Arix kept an eye out for mysterious warnings or any sign of hidden secrets. All of the tunnels eventually led to one central point. It was a giant underground room, built like a stadium but looked more like a sacrificial chamber. Arix held his torch up high as he looked at giant room. The walls were made of carved stone, all with incredibly detail images and writings. Strange symbols, skulls and arcane writing stretched over every wall. Arix had a feeling this was the secret he was looking for. At the center of the room was three torches, the fire was purple, blue and green, one color slowly fading into the next as it burned.

Arix walked closer to get a better look at the torches when suddenly heavy smoke spewed from the flames. The smoke circled around and finally took on a form. A tall thin man, wearing black robes now stood in front of Arix. “come to join your friend?” asked the man. Arix looked confused but then noticed further into the room was the body of another adventurer. “Damn, someone DID get here first” Arix cursed under his breath. Then stopped to think “oh, also hes dead” Arix added grief adding to his voice. He knew adventuring would be dangerous, but never thought that other people might also be adventurers and never came back. But seeing the dead man on the floor made his fathers warnings seem more real. When Arix looked back, the thin man was smiling. “Yes, you’ll do. Your so full of life, your soul will feed the fires” Then the man lifted his hand and skeletons came up from the ground to grab Arix.

Arix whirled around and bashed his torch over the head of one of the skeletons. The undead minion burst into fire and crumbled to bones. The second skeleton kept a slow pursuit as the frightened adventurer ran for his life. “Why are you doing this? Who are you?” Arix asked as he ran in circles around the Arena like room. As he ran more skeletons appeared to capture him. “I am Arlend Hidonon, the founder of the Hidonon family and immortal necromancer” Replied Arlend. “so you kill people to stay alive?” Arix asked. He reached into his back and pulled out his hammer, which is more for practical uses, but used it as a weapon by hitting one of the skeletons with it. The force of the hammer cracked the skull, releasing a tiny-trapped spirit. “I take the souls of every Hidonon who has ever lived and died, also the soul of anyone who stumbles into my tunnels. There are many entrances to this location and I draw in the occasional grave robber. But this place is built to harness souls of the dead, not so I can stay alive, but so I can return to life. I am no more than an echo, a shadow of my former self. With enough souls I will be reborn as the most powerful wizard in the world!” Laughed Arlend.

“Using those torches and this stadium” Arix said as he smashed another skeleton. “Yes, exactly” Arlend replied in delight. “Thanks for clearing that up” Arix replied. He reached into his bag, pulled out his fire bomb gun and shot at the three standing torches. The small explosion and the fire that spread from it, toppled the torches and broke them on impact. Souls started to rapidly escape, rising up from the floor and leaving for the afterlife. Arlend screamed and his skeletons all collapsed. Arix fired another shot at the engravings, disfiguring the ancient text and hopefully ruining any chances to restart the soul harvest. Arlend faded away, though Arix wasn’t sure if he was really gone or not. Either way, it was time to leave. He quickly made his way back through the tunnels. He didn’t have enough explosives to destroy the stadium, but he hoped he ruined enough to stop Arlend.

After following one of the tunnels out for a half hour, Arix finally reached one of the exits, a cave mouth on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean. Arix sat down and stared at the water, He needed the rest. Even though he didn’t get any treasure, at least he was still alive and better yet, he had another great adventure.
