Joseph and Jaye save Autumn part 4 of 4

When Joseph Stephens and Jaye Williams arrived to the source of the heat they found Ignitious laying on a beach chair and a giant fire ball, which he conjured, was floating in the sky above the trees acting like a second sun. “I was expecting a forest on fire, not a flame elemental enjoying an extended summer” Jaye joked. “Both are equally bad. This isn’t the summer land, this is the Autumn land” Joseph said with a low growl. “Ok big guy, lets ease off on the demon juice. We just gotta whack this guy a couple of times with the ol’claw hammer and we can go back to drinking coffee in the cold breeze like a couple of weirdos” Jaye said as he patted Josephs arm. Joseph turned to Jaye with a sad but sincere smile “Yeah, I am just getting a little worked up. It will be ok” Joseph said, nodding several times as if to try and convince himself.

Ignitious spotted the two friends walking up. Jaye had his pumpkin sword drawn and Joseph had his magic staff ready. The humanoid fire spirit let out a quick laugh at the sight of the two. Tiny flames spit out from his mouth when he laughed. Ignitious’ laugh caused Joseph’s anger to burn hotter. “This isn’t a laughing matter. You are about to be destroyed. We spared your brother, you wont be spared, not after we saw what you two did to Patches” Joseph shouted with his teeth gritted. Before Ignitious could reply a ten foot tall whirlwind was launched from Joseph’s staff. The whirlwind tore a path through the ground and struck the flame elemental before he could get out of his beach chair.

The whirlwind shook in the place where Ignitious previously sat. Flames erupted from the whirlwind in every direction until the whirlwind was dispelled, leaving a very angry flame spirit in its place. Ignitious had flames raging all over his body, with his core form made from a searing magma substance. “I was just going to make this into a second summer forest because I felt bad for old Patches but since you attacked me so rudely, I am going to burn this forest down to ASH!” Ignitious shouted then shot straight at Joseph with incredible speed and force. Jaye saw Ignitious lunge across the battlefield and barely had enough time to summon his golden leaf. The leaf created a wind barrier just a split second before the giant fireball that was Ignitious hit Joseph. The flame spirit was repelled by the windshield and sent backward but the force of his attack shut down the shield and made Jaye stumble backward slightly. All of the magical items they had, took their energy to use and Jaye was already feeling tired from repelling such a large attack.

The two friends prepared to attack but Ignitious was relentless and went into another attack. Jaye spotted a large hollowed out log, it was large, sturdy and looked like it had been there for a hundred years. “Follow me!” Jaye shouted as he ran for cover. Joseph ran right behind Jaye. Ignitious was fast and was quickly gaining on the two. The flame spirit turned into a fireball and launched himself forward. The two friends jumped into the hollow log just in time. Ignitious sped by the log and hit a tree ten feet away. “Your luck will not last!” Shouted the angry spirit. “This log is pretty great! Maybe we could just camp here until Ignitious leaves” Jaye joked. Joseph half smiled.

Ignitious was tired of his enemy surviving his attacks and decided to go all out. “You dared to bring out my wrath, now try and survive it” Ignitious shouted. He stretched his arms up into the air and summoned flames. Fire floated in the air above Ignitious, the collection of fire was bigger than Ignitious himself. “Your father was a matchstick!” Shouted Jaye, who was poking his head out of the log. “and your mother was an easy bake oven” Joseph shouted, still in the log.

“Enough!” Ignitious shouted as he shot all of his summoned flames at the two. The intense fire it the ancient log, fire burst out in every direction upon contact with the log. The surrounding area was burned and turned to ash but somehow the log stood, old, stubborn and sturdy. “The log protected us!” Joseph said in amazement. “The log provides!” Jaye cheered. The giant log was blackened and smoking but it protected the friends.

Ignitious was furious but couldn’t summon another attack right away without injuring himself. “Hey, he’s outta juice!” Jaye cheered. “Right! Then lets smoke this turkey!” Joseph said with a determined expression. Jaye pulled his claw hammer from his jacket, used his magic pumpkin to cover him in armor and then charged out from the safety of the log. Joseph took a swig from the warm liquid in the water flask, because it tasted good, then charged out holding his magic staff.

Ignitious saw the two charging and tried to throw a few flame attacks. The half hearted attacks were easily dodged and the friends were left unhindered. “I’ve been waiting for this! Clawww Hammar!” Jaye brought his hammer down and struck the fire elemental in the chest, knocking him back. Joseph followed behind then summoned earth tremors and whirlwinds from his staff. Joseph’s anger still boiled inside of him and he was determined to bring down Ignitious down, even if it meant killing him.

The ground shook around Ignitious, the whirlwind pulled loose rocks from the ground as it went and the multiple whirlwinds filled with rocks and stones hit Ignitious. Ignitious was wounded but still standing. He charged up a fireball and threw it at Joseph.

Joseph hadn’t let up his attack at this point and continued to charge forward casting magic. Jaye jumped and knocked Joseph out of the way of the incoming fireball. “You aren’t suddenly fire proof are you?” Jaye asked with a smile “No” Joseph replied shortly then stood up and began charging his energy into his magic staff. Joseph was determined but also blinded by his singular goal to defeat Ignitious.

Joseph’s anger had been building for a long time, every time July the fat spirit of summer, Old Man Winter or any other troublesome spirit tried to disrupt the Fall. Joseph didn’t try to invade summer land to make the season shorter, he didn’t go out of his way to fight Winter so Autumn lasted longer. Joseph was peaceful and waited all year for his favorite season and yet someone had to try and stop him from enjoying it. He suffered through summer, getting heat stroke, heat sickness, headaches, dizziness, sweating through his shirts, and yet he suffered through it without trying to conquer anything. Ignitious treated Patches worse than anyone yet and the attack from the Fire and Ice brothers was the final straw.

Joseph had been charging magic into his staff then unleashed it on Ignitious. A giant wall of stone rose up from the ground then rushed forward like a tidal wave, whirlwinds flew at Ignitious, each whirlwind was bigger than usual and streaked with lighting. Electricity flashed and sparked through the air. The rock tidal wave, the electrical mega whirlwinds and just pure bolts of lighting blasted forward at super speeds. Ignitious was fast but he couldn’t manage to escape this onslaught in time. All of the magic attacks struck Ignitious. The flame elemental shook and convulsed in place, the flames that made up his outer body pulsed and flared out in every direction at random intervals. When the attacks died down Ignitious was left with only his core magma form and was more vulnerable now, like Glacious in his cracked solid ice form.

Joseph had spent most of his energy with those attacks and now gasped to catch his breath. Ignitious was defeated and fell to his knees “Alright, I give up. I won’t bother Patches or his land again” Ignitious said, his voice was weak and hollow. “No forgiveness, he wont get mercy” Joseph said between breaths. Jaye winced “We’ll spare him like we spared Glacious. Let me handle this” Jaye said to a barely standing Joseph.

“We spared your brother and we will spare you. Whatever grudge or debt you think you have between patches, is over. Enough fighting, try to do something useful for a change” Jaye told Ignitious then shook his claw hammer menacingly at the wounded flame spirit.

Ignitious vanished in a ball of flame leaving a small scorch mark on the grass where he knelt. Jaye turned to Joseph “Glad that is settled. Now you need to relax with all of that ‘no mercy’ crap. Lets drink some tea or something and calm down. We should probably check on Patches as well” Jaye shrugged then walked over to collect his injured friend.

The two friends saved Autumn land and thus had saved the season itself. When they reached Patches hut they found the Autumn spirit sleeping soundly with a small sprout budding from his torso. This sprout would grow into a new pumpkin head, returning Patches to his former glory. Joseph was starting to calm down now that autumn was saved. The friends didn’t get a reward for their help but they did get to keep their new weapons, at least until Patches remembered that they were missing.

The real reward was a new autumn day on the horizon, the exciting frights of Halloween, the chilly Fall mornings, the harvest of food and the time to reflect.

Joseph and Jaye never made it home though, before they could reach the portal to home, they were whisked away onto another adventure. But that is another story for another time.

Maze Mind

My mind winds like a maze, twisting and going off in every direction. Solutions can be found but only through the most complicated thought process. Some never make it past the front door, others die halfway through. I sometimes get stuck in my own maze, losing track of time and forgetting why I even came there in the first place.

The maze is filled with things. Fantasy creatures, trees, rain, autumn days and snowy nights by the fireplace. Cats wander through freely, never getting lost and always comfortable wherever they end up. Dead ends are a regular occurrence, often with walls made from distractions, bright lights, colors, catchy music, doubt and painkillers.

The twisting halls could be considered beautiful and complex but I find them tiring and most find them annoying. Point A does not always lead to point B even though I wish it could.

Stephen sits and talks to a friend. “So I brought my cat to the vet, she has bad teeth, anyway, so I got her all checked out and her teeth cleared, the vet was like 800 dollars for the whole operation. (That’s too much detail). So yeah I was pretty nervous about paying that much (Stop talking so much, get to the point. They stopped listening) oh! So anyway I spent all my money on the Vet, my cat is doing fine by the way, so do you think I could borrow a few dollars for gas?”….

Conversations spiral out of control and the more I talk the more nervous I get. I get lost in my own mind, the maze gets bigger and the walls grow higher. (Didn’t I come through this way already? Did I just repeat myself for the third time?). Point of the story, the point of the conversation. What is the point of my thought? Was there a point? Is my brain just giving me words to fill the empty space in between events?

When a slow song about missing someone comes on the radio and I immediately blurt out “Oh this reminds me of a video game” people look at me funny. If I led them through the path that started from sad song to video game it would make sense but most don’t have the energy for it and those that try tend to get lost. Others use their own guidelines, their brain uses its own logic to navigate my Maze. But I doubt their mind is built like mine, so often they give up. When I do finally find a way through it seems the journey wasn’t even worth the trouble. One person knows how this one song, reminds me of this one video game. But they don’t care and I wasted energy.

A dead end of doubt is added to my maze.

Times End

The air was chilly and cold, snow covered the ground and snowflakes drifted through the air, occasionally flying into things and getting stuck. Lanterns hung from thin black metal poles that dotted the road. The road and everything else was covered in snow. The surrounding trees were covered in snow and the lake was frozen.  Fog hung in the air, adding a pale gray and darkness to the white sheets of snow.

Through the fog a man could be seen. He wore a brown overcoat, black shoes, warm leather gloves and a scarf. He wore a bowler hat and was walking up the road. Wind blew, but he didn’t fight against it, he just walked like normal. He walked up the road calmly and didn’t seem bothered by the ice, snow, wind and cold. The man’s white hair blew around, messing it up. The man had a trimmed white beard, it came down to his neck. The man was thin and old, but didn’t seem burdened by that either. In his hand he carried a lantern. It was a metal lantern with a handle and the light was glowing a pale blue. It helped him see through the fog and did a better job than the street lamps that were burning their normal fire and producing yellow light.

The fog parted as the man passed, as if the blue light was repelling it. The man walked at a slow and stead pace, where he was headed, was a mystery. Then the man stopped and pulled a pocket watch from his side coat pocket. He looked at the time, then clicked the top several times. The very next second, the man was gone. He vanished from existence as if he never existed at all.

The old gentleman reappeared in a completely different place. This place was an empty chuck of land, floating in a dark and endless abyss. The ground was cobblestone and chest high walls were built alone the edges of the floating island. The walls were brown old brick, but were in decent condition. These plain old walls were the only thing keeping someone from stumbling off the edge and falling into the endless abyss. Old Fashioned black metal street lights sat in each corner of the main square. The square was the center of the island, from this location, little cobble stone paths ran off into different directions. Each stone path linked smaller floating islands to the main square. On the southern side of the square is a half built bridge that doesn’t go anywhere. The old man refers to is as “The Bridge to the abyss” because walking over the bridge would cause you to fall right in.

Each little connected island or ‘room’ also had small walls build along the edges, but no roof or doors anywhere to be seen. If you go to the north there is a lone door. The door has never been opened. It doesn’t seem to lead to anything though. Its just a door sitting in the middle of one of the rooms north of the square. All of this was know as the End of Time. this floating island was like a lost and found for the universe. Anything with memory and importance that is lost, ends up at the End of time. there is a room on the cobblestone island that is filled with trinkets, knick-knacks, mementoes and anything that was a physical with hopes, memories and sentimental attachment attached to it. But for the more obscure things, like a single thought or the name of a long lost friend, those things all end up in a large leather bound book. The book had its own stand and was located in the square with the old man. The man, who was named ‘Zindel’, would also use the book to summon up the words of other books and documents through history.
The creation of the island of cobblestone and walls wasn’t a plan, but series of random events. There was a point in the future when time, the universe and all of existence ends. The dark abyss of nothing was all that remained. But such an enormous event as all of time suddenly stopping made this moment in oblivion to be linked with every time and place that had ever existed. The story of Zindel and his floating island will have to be for another day. For now, this is how the End of time came to be and how it works.

Now Zindel lives for eternity in a place were time doesn’t exists. He uses his perch to oversee time and watches it all pass before his eyes on an infinite loop. Time is a tricky thing, its hard to explain and isn’t something you can see or hold onto, yet everyone believes in it and is conscious of it at all ‘times’.

Zindel had been visiting an old wintry land that was familiar to him before he returned to the end of time. He cannot interact with anything in any time, but still likes to go visit. Occasionally Zindel will peek into a random country on earth and view a New Years Eve celebration. To him, it looks like a countdown to the end of time, but to the others, it is a great and wonderful time. It is a time for hope for the future and reflection on the past. Every year the people of the land want to receive a better year than the last one and every year seems just a new and fresh as the last one. It’s a cycle the people get stuck in. they have anticipation for the New Year and are tired of the old one. It is as if they are stuck in a time loop. Zindel watches this and laughs. The blissful optimism is as funny as it is enviable.

Time ticks on, the world clock ticks, tick tick tick. But still life goes on, so lets all enjoy this New Year and look forward to the challenges and rewards it will bring with it.

Happy New Year!

Autumns End

The wind blows and dry fall leaves rustle and rattle as they glide along the pavement. The air has gotten chilly and the trees have lost all of their color. The official end of autumn might not be till December, but by late November everyone is preparing for winter. Autumn is a strange time of the year, it’s the shortest and the most beautiful. The trees turn yellow, orange and red like a great glowing fire and like a flame they only last a short time before being snuffed out. Autumn’s beauty cannot last forever, though some of us wish it could. It is the same reason that autumn is so short as it is lovely. Autumn is just a transition between summer and winter. The leaves absorbed as much sun as they could in summer and for a month or so they release their leaves and let the wind blow them away as they prepare for a winter hibernation.

In the united states there are states that get warm weather all the time, there are some states were it feels like spring all the time, either early spring with its sunshine and mild weather, or late spring with cool weather and rain on a daily basis. There are places were it is cold and snowing constantly, yet there are no places that experience a longer autumn or a perpetual autumn. To keep a balance of chilly weather that’s not too cold and leaves always on the brink of loosing all of their leaves would be impossible. So even though the season is not officially over, we all know that by the end of thanksgiving, it will be Autumn’s end. So wish it good-bye and good luck and prepare for the winter ahead. It is ok to be sad when your favorite season passes, but don’t forget to enjoy the time you have in between as you wait for the Autumn to leaves to come around again.

Ascended and the End

The situation had grown more dangerous than either Jake or Don originally thought.  The Ascended Chambers wasn’t just a reminder to the public of the their presence and it wasn’t just a place to file reports and keep secret information. The Chambers were actually door that brought the Ascended to earth. Since the Ascended seemed to fly, Don didn’t think they needed something like this, but he was wrong. Not only was he wrong but he also sent his entire team into a building that could easily be flooded with Ascended within seconds.

Five Ascended came from the pillar of light at first, then Don used his powers to kill one and stun the other four. Then he sent the bulk of his team to retreat, scatter and regroup at base to defend it. Jake, Sid, Samantha, Gregory and Don stayed behind. Just as Don feared the room quickly began to fill up with Ascended. Some of them stayed to fight others flew off after the escaping rebels. Sounds of heavy gunfire and screaming could be heard outside of the building. The bullets whizzed through the air and every hit only seemed to stun the pursuing Ascended. One of the rebels threw a grenade into the air then used is power of telepathy to shoot it straight at the ascended. The grenade hit and exploded. The Ascended chasing him was torn in half, but the half with the most intact seemed to remain functional and continued pursuit. The legs and half a torso ran after the rebels until it finally collapsed. Rebels with Telepathy used their power to make their guns shoot with pinpoint percussion and can even aim their grenades, but there weren’t any rebels that were strong enough to lift cars or affectively fight the Ascended.

Back inside the chambers, Jake, Sidney, Sam and Greg were preparing to fight. Jake whirled his arms through the air, fire building up on his body as he moved. He had to concentrate and motion helped him use his fire attacks. He thought of it like he was catching fire out of the air and holding onto it. It built up more and more until his body was a pillar of fire. Not only was he surrounded by fire, but his body actually looked like it had been turn to flames. The odds were against him so he put all of his power into this fight. Jake let loose and began throwing fire around and even started to punch and tackle the ascended. Anything he touched seemed to burn instantly.

Seeing Jake jump into action the others followed his lead. Samantha focused her power and set out into a full sprint, charging at one of the Ascended. Before the mighty angel like creature could bring its sword down, Sam encased herself in ice armor and collided with the Ascended. The tackle stunned the creature, then Sam whipped her arm to deliver a back handed punch, but this punch had an icy spike jetting out of it. She pummeled the light creature with her spiky ice gauntlets and tore it to shred, the scraps disappeared into the air as they were torn from the Ascended. As she fought a flaming sword came down and struck her. The flame melted her armor and she crumpled to the ground. Sidney wasn’t the bravest man, but he sprang into action anyway and delivered a shadow kick to the ‘head’ the attacking Ascended. Then lifted his hands up, summoning shadows from the ground to cut into the Light being like razors.

The room was quickly getting flooded with Ascended to the point that it was difficult to see were one light body ended and another began. Greg lifted rock from the ground and made walls around his team. These rock walls were getting ripped apart but having a chunk of stone between them and an Ascended blade, even for a second, made the difference. Jake was burning out as he used his power to its fullest, Gregory couldn’t fight because he was so busy protecting everyone else and Sam and Sid were fighting together because they both had a habit of getting overwhelmed. Don hadn’t done much since his first attack but instead seemed to be recovering from it. He watched the battle and studied the pillar of light closely. Then something clicked in his mind and he ran full speed at the light. Fire and lighting jumped off his body and hit any Ascended that got too close to him. This didn’t kill or even stun them, it just kept them at bay as he ran by. Then without giving it another thought he jumped into the light and disappeared.

Jake and the team exchanged glances. They realized that the light might not be a generated that made Ascended, but instead a portal to their home. The group decided that they weren’t winning this one battle and Don was the strongest, so they all ran for the light and jumped through it. When Jake jumped through the light blinded him, but when his vision returned he noticed right away they were in a different land. The stood in a green meadow, with a bright blue sky, with apple trees dotting the landscape. It was a sunny day and all felt calm. It was a nice change from the battle they just escaped from.

Jake walked through the serene landscape and as he saw his teammates appear, he noted how beautiful the meadow and trees were. Samantha gave him a strange look and said. “All I see is a peaceful beach and ocean waves”. Jake looked back at the meadow and for a split second the world twitched, as if it was unsure of itself and doubted its own existence. Gregory finally appeared. “I’m home! I can’t believe it. Guys I want to show you around my town. I practically grew up in these hills” Greg said. Everyone gave Greg a strange look and the world shifted and twitched. Then as if it knew the lie wouldn’t last, it gave out completely. When reality kicked it, the group began to wish it hadn’t. the real world they were teleported to was a war torn city with a sky choked out by smog and at the center of it, Don stood over an old man begging for his life.

Jake ran to Don to see what was going on. “Don, who is this? what are you doing?” Jake asked. Don just sneered at the old man. “It was your fault!” He yelled as he kicked the helpless man. As Don grew more angry, his elemental powers began to spark and burn all over his body. “I was trying to help, I didn’t mean for it to be this way” the old man pleaded. Jake’s body roared up with flames and he shoved Don backward to get some questions answered. Even protected by flames, the intensity of Don’s power injured Jake a little. The Ascended came from this world, a war torn, crime-ridden world that eventually destroyed itself. This man created the Ascended to bring peace and used a perception filter so people would accept the Ascended as their protectors. People would believe what they wanted to believe. The Ascended just energy held together by a core of robotics” Don explained.  Jake was baffled. “but how did they get to our world, and why? And why are they after us and, and how do you know any of this? you just got here!” Jake asked Don. Shook his head. “I’ve been here for hours, that transport as a time lag. so if you jumped in a few minutes after me it would be like hours, or something like that. Everything I know I have been beating out of this little twerp’ Don replied kicking the doctor another kick.

“Please, a don’t hurt me” the old doctor pleaded. “I made the machines to keep order. I made them to look like our ancient protectors from the old stories, but used a device that let people see whatever they wanted. Same device lets the weak and tired trick their brain into believe this world isn’t a wasteland. Once our world was beyond help, the guardians left to seek out other worlds to protect. They went all over the galaxy and settled anywhere they could to protect intelligent life from themselves. They are good! Why do you hurt me?” the Doctor explained and pleaded. “Because your THINGS are hunting my people for having special powers” Don said, lighting shoot off his shoulders and disappearing into the sky. “They probably saw your powers as dangerous as my planets advanced weaponry. The more destructive a species gets the harder it is to protect them. Bombs can be dismantled, but only way to get rid of special power is remove person with power. That is very logical” The doctor explained, almost sounding proud of his creations. “LOGICAL?!” Don shouted then grabbed a hold of the doctor and released his elemental energy through his hand into the doctor’s body. The poor old man, was electrocuted, burnt, frozen, and over all torn to shreds by Don’s mix of powers.

“You went too far man!” Jake yelled fire burning around his body. Don just dropped the smoldering body and began to walk toward the portal. “We need to close the portals and cut the Ascended or guardians off from our world. I get that they want to protect, but if they are going to kill every mage or scientist that might be ‘harmful to humanity’, they gotta go” Don said, ignoring what Jake said earlier. “But what about our powers? We still don’t know why we have them” Samantha chimed in as she followed Don to the portal. “Maybe its just part of humanity. Some people are just gifted” Don replied, not really knowing the real reason. One thing was for sure, their powers weren’t related to the guardians.

“So what now?” Sidney asked. Don shrugged his shoulders. “We keep fighting. We have a goal now. it wont be long before we destroy every teleport platform and destroy every Ascended we see” Don replied. After that the team was quiet. They got their answers, but were a long way away from a solution. Jake was hopeful, even if they didn’t stop the Ascended today, he knew that day would be close. Pretty soon Mages and regular people could live in peace and the human race could get back to governing itself. Until then, the Rebels and all the other mages would fight.

The long Night Walk

It was a dark October night. A cold wind swept through the town, leaves blew through the air and the tree branches shook as if the trees th...
